友誼是大家都很珍惜的關係資源。但是關於友誼的內涵則隨著時代與文化背景的不同而給予不同的詮釋。
在西方有關友誼的傳統詮釋最有名的是亞里斯多德 (Aristotle) 在其著作Nichomachean Ethics 有關友誼 (philia) 的討論。亞里斯多德認為，友誼應該包含三個成份：享受陪伴共處、實際互相幫助、共同追求良善。
在這三者之中，建立在享受陪伴共處的友誼是最容易改變或消失，因為興趣或是感官之快樂 (sensory pleasure) 常常是變幻無定的。興趣社團或是年青人間的友誼常常會建立在這種稍縱即逝的享樂主義 (hedonism) 之基礎上面。
建立在互相幫助的友誼也是短暫的，因為當處境轉移而須要對方幫助的情況消失時，這種建立在對方有實際幫助 (practical help) 價值的友誼也就會跟著淡化褪色。在職場上或是較年長者間之友誼比較容易建立在此功利主義 (utilitarianism) 之基礎上面。
亞里斯多德認為，在三種友誼的基礎當中，共同追求良善的友誼最為堅固，也最能夠歷久彌新。這是最理想完美的友誼。因為這種友誼的參與者本身是良善的，彼此也被對方的良善所吸引，並且他們友誼的主要目的是站在對方的立場來幫助對方在良善上面繼續成長。前兩者友誼的動機偏向自我中心主義 (egoism)，其友誼的本質偏向工具主義 (instrumentalism)。這種友誼的基礎是建立在朋友人格的良善本質 (essential goodness)，而不是前兩者的友誼是建立在朋友所擁有的附加功能 (incidental function)。更進一步而言，這種良善本質同時也是會令對方感到快樂，而且也會幫助對方在良善上面不斷成長，所以，建立在共同追求良善基礎的友誼，同時也有享受陪伴共處以及實際互相幫助的功能。這種友誼是永恆的，也是完美的，是最高形式的人間友誼。這種友誼在人世間是罕見的，因為擁有完美良善品格的人並不常見。
這種友誼的形成也是須要較長久的時間，因為，人與人之間須要經過相當時間彼此傾聽與傾訴的親密互動才能逐漸瞭解彼此的人格本質並且產生互相的信任。Suzanne Stern-Gillet主張這種友誼是全人對全人之接納與尊重。Ray Pahl 認為這種友誼就像一面完美的鏡子，讓我們從朋友身上看到自我本質的投影。
這種友誼願意發時間去發掘並欣賞對方的品格優點，是可以建立互相的同理心 (empathy)。這種友誼也可以為了成全對方的良善而願意自我犧牲，具有利他主義 (altruism)。這種友誼可以尊重並珍惜對方的獨特性 (uniqueness)，並且也會尊重並珍惜自己的獨特性，因此，在互相幫助對方於良善上面不斷成長的過程中並會同時保持彼此的獨特性。如此，這種友誼會將彼此的互動與關係帶到保持各自獨特性下的和諧的合一 (harmonious unity) 而不是消滅彼此差異性後的完全的同一 (complete uniformity)。
主耶穌基督在最後的晚餐時告訴他的門徒說，他不把門徒們當為奴僕，乃是視同朋友。主人與奴僕之間是有很明顯的地位與權柄的落差，朋友之間是彼此平等的互相尊重。奴僕對於主人的命令只有毫無選擇的順服的責任 (the obedience of duty)，朋友之間的的順從乃是經過親密的溝通過程而瞭解對方的期待與動機，並且是出於愛的動機而作出為了成全對方心意而願意放棄自我權利的抉擇 (the obedience of love)。主耶穌的期待與命令就是要他的門徒們能夠效法他對門徒們的愛來彼此相愛而建立最完美永恆的友誼圈 (the circle of perfect friends)。十七世紀從英國開始，由喬治福斯 (George Fox) 所發起推動的貴格會 (Quakers) 是將這個精神發揚光大的教會團體，他們自稱為“朋友的宗教團體”(the Religious Society of Friends)。
各位親愛的和平兄姐，但願我們都能夠成為上帝的好朋友，也是主耶穌基督的好朋友，也願意學習主耶穌對我們的愛來彼此相愛而成為彼此最好的屬靈朋友 (soul friends)。
